Design and analysis of longitudinal–flexural hybrid transducer for ultrasonic peen forming

Ultrasonic peen forming (UPF) is an emerging technology that exhibits great superiority in both its flexible operating modes and the deep residual stress it produces compared with conventional plastic methods. Although ultrasonic transducers longitudinal vibration have been widely studied, they seldom incorporated into UPF devices for machining confined spaces. To meet requirements of this type machining, a sandwich-type piezoelectric transducer coupled longitudinal–flexural vibrational proposed. The basic structure designed to obtain large amplitudes modes. Experimental results obtained prototype device demonstrate feasibility proposed transducer. measured amplitude working face mode 1.0 μm, electrical matching increases by 40%. flexural characteristics same are also tested found be slightly smaller than those mode. resultant strokes impact pins reach 1.7 mm 1.2 modes, respectively. capability has evaluated via 15-min on standard 2024-T351 aluminum plates.
